Beliefs About Gemstones

Gemstones are not only used as decorations in clothes, bags, jewelries and other decorative purposes, but also there are beliefs tied to them even during the ancient time.
Opals bring disasters, rubies remove evil thoughts in our minds, turquoise brings good fortune- these are just some of the superstitions that people follow about gemstones. These superstitions already existed through the ancient times. Sometimes, these beliefs differ from other beliefs. For example, the Europeans during the middle ages believed that the diamonds were symbols of the sun and innocence. However, in Persia, people believed that these are sources of wrongdoings and have been created by evil itself.
Marriage
Turquoise used to be popular to avoid disagreement between a couple. Aquamarine promotes the love of both people. Topaz is a representation for loyalty. A diamond must even be given to the lover or the value of the diamond will be lost. An emerald is a symbol of success in love and usually used as an engagement ring.
Medicine
These gemstones have also been related to preventing and curing diseases and illnesses. Amethyst is said to be good in getting rid of headaches and toothache. Diamonds are believed to be used to cure leprosy, insanity and even your worst nightmares. A blood stone or ruby is placed on the wound to likely stop the blood. Agate lessens the fever. A carnelian fixes loose teeth (this is famous among the aged). Some people also believed that it can cure tumors and strengthens our voices. Opals or Sapphires gives back your once clear eyesight.
Protection
They were also believed to be used in driving against things like evil. Sapphire was believed to be good in driving away evil thoughts and instead, pureness. The Hindus used pearls as charms against evil. The garnet prevents a person from being wounded or injured.
